PORT Research: National Energy Park
We propose the construction of 25 new nuclear power plants bundled with 2,000 acres of ecological preserve per facility in order to 1) mitigate the perceived concerns of environmentalists by creating a vast wildlife habitat around these facilities; 2) isolate the facilities as far as possible from highly populated areas in order to prevent any risk of contamination to urbanized areas; and 3) to demonstrate the possibilities of a 21st century ideal of a National Park that is focused not on pastoral or picturesque experiences, but on ecological preservation and environmental protectionism while; 4) creating jobs and alternative sources of stimulus for the American economy.
“Since September 11, the nation’s 104 nuclear plants have become an object of much attention from homeland-security experts and terrorists alike.” The result has been the creation of a militarized no-mans land around these facilities that has unexpectedly transformed into a vibrant, diverse wildlife habitat “punctuated only by the songs of birds.”
